February Update 2012

February Update

Pennies for the Pool
The Junior Council has raised over $4,000 since mid-January with its Pennies for the Pool campaign, sponsored by Raleys!  The fourth graders in the Loomis School District won ice cream parties for raising the most money in the three-week period ending February 3.  While the school contest is over, collection boxes can still be found at Loomis and Granite Bay Raleys, Pizza Factory, Taylor’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, M&D Beauty Supply, Norcal Swim Shop, and the Loomis Chamber of Commerce. Look what’s jingling around your pocket and drop it in the nearest box!

24-Hour Swim-a-Thon
Even if you can swim for only fifteen minutes, you can help with the Junior Council 24-Hour Swim-a-Thon on April 21-22. The goal is to have at least one person swimming in each lane for 24 consecutive hours. We are looking for swimmers of ALL ages to take a pledge envelope and swim some laps.  There will also be a Float-a-Thon option in the side pool for those of you who want to support the event in a more relaxed fashion (Bring Your Own Loungechair)! All swimmers will receive a special “Jump In” swim cap. We expect to get both TV and radio coverage of this event.  There will be a snack bar and sponsoring food vendors on deck. On Saturday, from 9:00-2:00 there will be a number of other vendors contributing to the festival atmosphere. The final hour of the swim-a-thon will be dedicated to some team relays for fun.  If you are interested in swimming or becoming a T-shirt or towel sponsor, or participating as a vendor, please contact us at friendsofthedopool@gmail.com.

Casino Night 2012

Cost is $35 advance, $40 at the door (ticket includes $50 of gaming chips and a soda or water). There will also be a POKER TOURNAMENT WITH PRIZES (add $20 advance, $25 at door). The evening will include complimentary finger food and desserts, silent auction, a raffle with fabulous prizes,
Black Jack, Poker, Roulette, Craps and a Wine Bottle Ring Toss!  We need your help to make this event a success! Come to the next planning meeting on Wednesday, February 29 at 7:00 p.m. at Del Oro room 701.

August Update

New Junior Council is Formed

The Friends of the Del Oro Pool announces the formation of a new Junior Council. We welcome students in grades 7-12. This unique opportunity for community service will offer the chance to learn about board procedures and structure, fundraising, and leadership skills. The group will meet once a month, with an additional separate monthly meeting of the board.  The group will organize its own fundraisers and support adult-organized fundraisers when appropriate. The leaders will be Heidi Walker, head coach of the Loomis Basin Dolphins, and Andy Withers, Principal of Penryn School. The first meeting will be Tuesday, August 23 at 5:30 p.m. at Del Oro High School room 701 (portable between the two gyms).

The new website is online! Check it out at the same address: http://www.deloroaquaticcenter.com/. Donations can now be accepted through PayPal.

Don’t forget to patronize our Pool Partners. See the attached list for complete details.

Come visit our display at Loomis Family Fun Fest on Thursday, August 18.

The Million Dollar Challenge

Capital Campaign Announces  Million Dollar Challenge!

The Aquatic Center Capital Campaign is off to an exciting start with a $1,000,000 matching challenge pledged by the Kamphefner Family.  For every personal donation received we will match that amount up to a total of $1 million. Says Rex Kamphefner, “I’m hoping this will encourage folks to dig a little deeper when making their contributions. The more they donate, the more I will match.”

“I used to be a runner, but turned to swimming thanks to my kids. It’s hard to hang out for hours at a swim meet and not want to jump in,” notes Kamphefner. “Of all the people I’ve hung out with in my life, I find that Del Oro and Loomis Basin Dolphin families are just the best—hard working, upbeat, and generous people with good values. I’m just so pleased to be a part of such a community and to have my children grow up here. I’ve lived all over the world, and so appreciate the values that our kids learn at the pool and Del Oro High School. It’s hard to find elsewhere. The current pool has been around 40 years, and it’s just shot. I want to do all I can to ensure another 40 years’ worth of good kids like the ones that we’re all so proud of right now. I’m sorry that we can’t do it all, but my family will give the pool project a big hard push if you will.”

Refer to our website, http://www.deloroaquaticcenter.com/ for donation information. You can donate via PayPal or by sending a check directly to the Placer Union High School District in Auburn, attention Anne Evans.

Remember that EVERY donation is appreciated and important. Furthermore, if you ask your friends and neighbors to help out, we will achieve our goals even more quickly. The current facility was built in this very way; we can do it again for our children and our community.

July Update

Summer News

It’s summertime—the Dolphins are having a great season, town open swim and swim lessons are underway, and Del Oro water polo teams are using every extra minute of pool time they can get as they prepare for their fall competitive schedule. There is no still water from 7:15 a.m. to 9 p.m! I think we need more pool space!

We are in the news! Look for an article in Loomis News this week! We also had a live interview that was broadcast on cable Broadband TV. You can see the clip on YouTube at this address: www.youtube.com/wavesacramento.  If you haven’t done so already, “Friend” us on Facebook at Friends of the Del Oro Pool! Additionally, we will have a booth at the Thursday Family Fun Fest in Loomis on August 4 and 11.

Did you know that Pasta Pomodoro has already donated over $1,200 thanks to our Pool Partner program? Make sure to check out the "partners" tab on the website: http://www.deloroaquaticcenter.com/ and patronize Pasta Pomodoro and all the other generous businesses that are contributing to the new Del Oro Aquatic Center.

When is the next fundraiser? Glad you asked! It’s Saturday, August 27. There will be a golf tournament at Lincoln Hills followed by a silent auction dinner at the Blue Goose. Both of these events are Del Oro senior projects. You can attend either or both. Please contact Ryllie Haynes (916) 663-4072 or del_oro_babe04@yahoo.com for tickets. Cost to golf and dine is $100 per person. Dinner only is $35 or $60 per couple. You can sponsor a reserved table for 10 for $500. Silent auction contributions are also appreciated.

The million dollar challenge is on! However, without your personal contributions, the pledge has nothing to match. EVERY DONATION MATTERS! Send your tax-deductible contributions to the PUHSD, attention of Anne Evans, and cite the Del Oro Pool Fund.

The formal mailing address for the PUHSD is:
Placer Union High School District
P.O. box 5048
Auburn, CA 95604

Stay cool, and stay safe!
